March is National Women’s History Month
Celebrate and Recognize Mrs. Janie Rogella Washington (1908 -2000)
Janie was born in Henderson, Texas to the late Freeman Miller and Daisy Cameron Miller, on March 28, 1908. She was the first of twelve siblings. Her parents, three sisters and four brothers preceded her in death. She was educated in the public schools in Overton, Texas and attended Texas College for three years.
During her active life, she was a pre-schoolteacher in the Sunday School Department, a member of the Women’s Ministries and Abigail Circle, and the Health Unit. In early 1990, Janie was presented by the Mount Zion Sunday School Department with the distinguished honor of Teacher Emeritus; a well-deserved recognition. Hundreds of Mount Zion children for more than forty years were taught the Bible basics by Mrs. Janie Washington. In Seattle, Janie attended nursing school and was employed at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital until her retirement. In the community, she was Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, Jepthah Chapter #8; Past State Loyal Lady Ruler of the Order of the Golden Circle Northwestern Assembly #45; charter member of the Virginia B. Washington Court #36, Order of Cyrene; and charter member of Deborah Court #3, where she served as the Most Ancient Matron and was treasurer.
